Periodontitis (Gum Disease)
2026, digital art, 8.5" x 11" This piece was created for the second volume of Medzine - The Body Issue. This McMaster affiliated club is part of the Meducator, an undergraduate Health Sciences journal. This medical illustration project aims to reshape narratives in healthcare and represent marginalized communities within medical illustration. Periodontitis, or gum disease, is the inflammation of the gums due to the buildup of plaque and collection of bacteria. Globally, periodontitis disproportionately affects Asian communities, specifically those in Indonesia, Vietnam, India, and the Philippines. This is due to a lack of accessibility to dental care as well as a lack of oral health literacy. This piece depicts a man receiving oral care and the progression of periodontitis from gingivitis to mild stage to advanced stage. Leap of Faith
2025, acrylic on wood, 24" x 24" This shield was created for the McMaster Shields Initiative. The team works together to create these wooden platforms (called shields) for children in hospitals. Members of the design team prep and design the shields then hand them off to members of the painting team. The project is complete when the shields are delivered to the children and they are able to have something vibrant and playful in the hospital. |
